- Sustainable Chalklands | Hannibal Brown
Simpsons Wine Estate, Kent, 'Chalklands', Classic Cuvée Brut 2019 Read more Winemaker: Leigh Sparrow Region: Kent Subregion: Kent Country: England Alcohol: 12.5% Dry/Sweetvalue: 1 (1 is dry, 7 is very sweet) ResidualSugar: 7 Contains Sulphites: Yes Vegetarian/Vegan: Yes/Yes Milk/Eggs: No/No Organic: No Biodynamic: No ProductCode: 6392519A Case unit of measure: 6X75CL FormatsAvailable: 75cl Closure: Mushroom Cork The epitome of English elegance, this fragrant sparkling wine has enticing aromas of fresh citrus and white flowers complemented by a biscuity character. Producer Note: Charles and Ruth Simpson have been making award-winning wines in the South of France since 2002. In 2012, attracted by the quality of the terroir and the opportunity to become part of one of the most dynamic wine producing regions in the world, they brought their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons Wine Estate. Aspiring to produce the finest quality English wine, they gradually planted 30 hectares of vineyards on the iconic chalk terroir of the North Downs and built a state-of-the-art winery. They are members of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain. In 2016, the Simpsons saw their first harvest. With a strong focus on provenance, they produce a highly acclaimed range of exclusively estate-grown still and sparkling wines, including the Chalklands Classic Cuvée 2016, which won a gold medal in the 2019 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. Vintage: The 2019 growing season was very typical of East Kent with good amounts of sunshine but not the exceptional warmth of 2018. The grapes developed excellent intensity of flavour, balanced by natural acidity. The first half of harvest ran smoothly before rainy spells resulted in few breaks in harvesting. Due to the excellent vineyard sites and diligent canopy management, the quality of fruit overall was of high, leading to distinctive wines that will continue to develop and unfurl with time. Vineyard: Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through the Champagne region and on to Burgundy. The Guyot trained vines are planted at a density of 4,200 vines per hectare with a range of both sparkling and Burgundian clones on either Fercal or 41B rootstocks. They are grown on south facing slopes, ensuring heat accumulation in the day and cold air drainage at night. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations. Pruning and harvesting takes place by hand and they are signed up to the WineGB’s Sustainability Scheme. Winemaking: The estate-grown grapes were hand-picked over a two-week period. Each variety is vinified separately, the grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented with selected yeasts. Malolactic conversion took place and the wines spent three months in stainless steel tanks ageing on light lees. After a series of tastings, the wines were blended, filtered and bottled to undergo the ‘prise de mousse’. Following the bottle fermentation, the wine spent 20 months ageing on the lees. TastingNote: The epitome of English elegance, this rich golden sparkling wine has enticing aromas of caramelised pear and floral millefeuille, combined with bright citrus flavours, linear precision and impressive length. Grape: Pinot Noir 60%, Chardonnay 40%
- Sustainable Nightjar | Hannibal Brown
Blackbook Winery, 'Nightjar' Pinot Noir 2021 Read more Winemaker: Sergio Verrillo Region: English Regional Wine Subregion: English Regional Wine Country: England Alcohol: 12.5% BodyValue: B (A islight, E isfull bodied) ResidualSugar: 0 Contains Sulphites: Yes Vegetarian/Vegan: Yes/Yes Milk/Eggs: No/No Organic: No Biodynamic: No ProductCode: 37452211 Case unit of measure: 12X75CL FormatsAvailable: 75cl Closure: Agglomerated Cork Reminiscent of good traditional Burgundy, this rich, silky and spicy wine has a lovely perfume of red fruits, impressive and rich. Producer Note: Blackbook Winery is an urban winery located in a railway arch in Battersea, South London. Their philosophy is simple: blending tradition with innovation. The grapes are sourced from carefully selected growers, who have vineyards within hours of the city and high-quality grapes. Blackbook endeavours to bring the hard work of the vineyard owners to the forefront, by creating a range of single vineyard wines that showcase the quality and potential of producing world-class still wine in England. Focussing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Blackbook uses a minimalist approach, with low to zero sulphur and natural yeasts, as they seek to reflect the vibrancy, culture and energy of London in their wines. Vintage: 2021 was an unusually cold vintage with multiple frost episodes during May and early June, resulting a delayed season. This was coupled with a cold and wet growing season. The harvest was one of the latest in recent memory with the first grapes arriving to the winery in late October and the last arriving close to the third week of October. The colder-than-average season resulted in lower alcohol wines with beautiful tension. Vineyard: The grapes come from the Crows Lane Estate single vineyard, situated on the coastal peninsula of the Crouch Valley in Essex, between the Crouch and Blackwater Rivers. The proximity to the rivers helps to protect the vineyard from spring frosts. The vineyard is south facing to optimise sunlight exposure in the capricious English climate. The vines are trained according to the double Guyot and Vertical Shoot positioning (VSP) methods and were planted in 2017 with German Pinot Noir clones. The vineyard is made up of London clay soils, which have high smectite content and offer good water retention properties, storing mineral ions which are exchanged with the roots and nourish the vines throughout summer growth period. The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and then travel the short distance to the winery in Battersea, London. Winemaking: The Blackbook Winery embraces minimal intervention winemaking. The grapes were naturally fermented in small, open-top fermenters, with 40% of the fruit vinified as whole bunches adding complexity and structure. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic conversion both took place with indigenous yeast. The wine spent eight months on its lees in French Burgundy barrels, of which 10% were new oak. Only minimal sulphur was used and the wine was vinified without additions. The wine was matured for a total of 11 months, prior to being bottled without fining or filtration. TastingNote: Reminiscent of old-world Pinot Noir, the Nightjar shows elements of sour and black cherries, blackcurrant with delicate hints of violet. It marries ripe fruit with sweet spice and black pepper while refined tannins lend structure through to a long, savoury finish. Grape: Pinot Noir 100%
